If you're like me, your skincare needs change from winter to summer. More sun means more sunscreen, warm weather means more sweating, and so many other changes that come along with summer. Reestablishing a new skincare routine can be daunting since there is so much information out there and so many products to choose from. It could take months to find a product that works well, layers well, applies nicely, has the desired ingredients, has a good consistency, isn't too greasy, too drying...the list goes on. I've done a lot of trial and error over the years, and I wanted to share some products that I am currently obsessed with, as well as my professional expertise. This is my personal summer skincare toolbox, and includes my go-to products and tips that I would mention to anyone if asked for a recommendation.
Here are my favorites for maintaining healthy skin this summer:
Sunscreen Makeup and Primer Duo
IT Cosmetics
Bye-Bye Foundation Full Coverage Moisturizer Broad-Spectrum SPF 50
La Roche-Posay
Anthelios Daily Face Primer with Sunscreen SPF 50
Here's why I love them:
I like to use products that can multi-task so that I can minimize my routine. The Bye-Bye Foundation Full Coverage Moisturizer Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 by IT cosmetics does just that. I use this product as a moisturizer, foundation, and sunscreen all-in-one. There are several formulations for different skincare needs and desired finishes, such as a matte-finish, glowy, or hydrating.
However, many of us do not apply enough of a product to get the full SPF coverage that is listed on the product. That is why I like to apply Anthelios Daily Face Primer with Sunscreen SPF 50 by La Roche-Posay prior to the Bye-Bye Foundation to ensure proper coverage. After cleansing and applying my choice of serum, I apply the Anthelios Primer and let it fully dry before applying the Bye-Bye- Foundation (if you already have a foundation you love, the Anthelios Primer can be used under that too).
Tip: Carry the Bye-Bye Foundation in your bag or purse to re-apply throughout the day.
Oily Skin, Clogged Pores, and Acne
In the summer, our pores tend to get larger and more congested than in the winter, which means more whiteheads and blackheads. You may notice products do not apply as nicely, absorb as quickly, or stay in place on the skin. Your makeup may seem to just "fall" into your pores rather than providing coverage. These products are great at combating the excess oils and larger pores that stem from increased sunscreen usage, sweating, dehydration and other summer influences. All of these products contain salicylic acid, which is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), and are meant to be used to your skin's tolerance. If you find that the suggested use on the packaging is causing dryness or irritation, decrease the frequency of use or discontinue. Additionally, be sure to wear your sunscreen!
The Ordinary
Salicylic Acid Masque 2%
This product is great for oily skin with large pores that get congested easily. This masque contains charcoal and clays that absorb excess oils and debris within the pores. I recommend using this masque as needed when the skin needs a deeper cleanse, but no more frequently than once a week.
Peach Slices
Salicylic Acid Toner
Great to use alone or in-between applications of The Ordinary's Salicylic Acid Masque. This can be used more frequently than the masque, but should be skipped on the days the masque is used. Apply this toner with a cotton round to afflicted areas. Consistent use will help to maintain clean and visibly smaller pores.
Hyperpigmentation and Sun Spots
These are a couple of my favorite products for diminishing and suppressing discoloration.
Good Molecules
Discoloration Correcting Serum
I frequently recommend this serum to clients prone to discoloration, whether it is related to sun exposure, age, or melasma. It contains tranexamic acid, which fades dark spots while simultaneously suppressing the formation of new spots.
Good Molecules
Brightening Toner
This toner contains Niacinamide, Arbutin, and Licorice Root Extract, all shown to approve the appearance of discoloration. These ingredients are well known for their brightening properties. It is fragrance-free, which is ideal, especially for those with sensitive skin. This toner can be used daily and applied with a cotton round after cleansing.
Professional Services
Lash Lift and Tint
This service is a must during summer if you don't already have lash extensions. The ease of waking up with perfectly curled and tinted lashes is incredible. It's also relieving to know that when I am sweating outside or swimming, I am not going to have mascara running down my face and into my eyes.
Diamond Resurfacing
This is a "no-nonsense" treatment for your pores. Dead surface skin cells are buffed away while the "vaccum" suction feature removes contents of the pores. Although this is an amazing treatment anytime, I rely on it more regularly in the summer, since my pores are typically more congested from the hot weather, sweating, and reapplication of sunscreen throughout the day.
Galvanic Treatment
Another heavy-hitter for clogged pores, and frequently combined with the Diamond Resurfacing. This treatment uses galvanic current to dilate the pores and loosen the contents of the pore to make for easier extractions.

Wellness Facial
Identifying what your skin needs is not always straightforward. A facial throughout the summer season is a safe and responsible idea. It is wise to check in with your Aesthetician every now-and-then to ensure your skin is healthy and happy. Your skin will thank you.
And lastly....DON'T FORGET YOUR SUNSCREEN!
